Today we have Dr. Don and a senior vet student from U.C. Davis visiting. We are fortunate here at Alpacas de Nueva Vida to not see the vet too often (although we do enjoy our visits with Dr. Don). We need pre-breed exams in order to send 4 of our females elsewhere for breeding. We are also having a small, mysterious growth removed from Merlot’s nose. Merlot is our first alpaca purchased in 1998. She has produced wonderful crias (offspring) over the years, many with great personalities. Yes, they do have personalities. Merlot is easy to handle, has a great maternal instinct, and is a bit guarded. Both of our import females are extra cautious, no doubt due to their experiences during importation. Well…….looks as if the growth may be just a fatty tumor. It will be sent in for analysis. Next, our young Piaggio has retained a couple baby teeth. A bit of anesthesia for his comfort….and voila, a handsome smile again! Merlot is awake and looks 5 years younger after her cosmetic surgery. Pre-breed exams on Gracie, Maya, Holly and Greta look good. They are healthy and ready for a handsome stud. Our vet takes the opportunity to teach the U.C. Davis student about prebreed exams with one of the younger maidens.
